3/23/2011 Web Conference

On the evening of Wednesday, March 23rd, I attended the EDLD 5352 Web Conference hosted by Cindy Cummings. Although this conference was very large when dealing with the number of participants, Dr. Cummings did a great job providing us with the best conference possible. I feel as if the conference as a whole was successful. I think the conferences are a great idea, but I personally have a hard time keeping up with the massive posts, some of which became random messages. I think conferences such as this are more useful when discussing only one topic. When we had an open forum and there were not strict guidelines of what to discuss it was hard to decipher all of the information posted. I think the conference would be more fun if it were a group of old friends just trying to catch up on each other’s lives. The information shared in the conference will be helpful as soon as I have time to look back and really think about the questions and all that was shared to answer them. I feel as if I will use the information discussed over ILD, LCE, TK-20 and other topics mentioned at some point. Quite frankly, there is barely enough hours in the day for me to do what is directly required, so I will have to focus on future requirements or items we must complete outside the course for our e-portfolio when I have spare time. Dr. Cummings did a great job and I appreciate how she handled having so many participants in the conference. Since Dr. Cummings spoke and did not type much, she had someone summarize what she said. I really appreciated that she had this done and also think it will prove to be helpful in future questions that may arise. I also think her suggestion of the Web. 2.0 for Educators book was a great idea.

National Educational Technology Plan

On March 5, 2010 the U.S. Department of Education released a draft of the National Educational Technology Plan. This plan was titled “Transforming American Education: Learning Powered by Technology” and the plan describes how information and communication technologies can help transform American Education. The National Educational Technology Plan focuses on five areas. These five areas are learning, assessment, teaching, infrastructure, and producitivity. There are two educational goals that have been set by the Obama Administration. These two goals consist of increasing the number of individuals holding a two or four degree to 60% of the population, while the second goal is to close achievement gaps between students so that students from all backgrounds and walks of life will graduate from high school being prepared to further their education in either a career or college courses.
The National Educational Technology Plan focuses on tailoring education to meet the needs of a variety of students in lieu of a one-size fits all educational approach. This plan encourages the use of technology and collaboration. The plan suggests that we use everyday technology to incorporate learning. This Report stresses the need for education to be individualized, personalized and differentiated. Tailoring lessons for the individual needs and interests of our students will create more future success in the world of education.
In order to meet the goals of the National Educational Technology Plan, we must provide and participate in useful professional development sessions. With constatnly changing technology, we must prepare ourselves as educational leaders so that we can convey needed information to our students. In this day and time, teachers need constant internet accesss inside their school classroom. We also need tools to help us break down data so that we can determine ares in which we need to focus for future improvement.

This particular report is similar to other reports viewed during this assigment. Taking a look at so much information related to technology, the use of technology and goals associated with technology allows us to know where we stand at this time and where we should be in the future. At this time, funding may hold us back when it comes to making techonological advances. We may not have the means to keep moving forward in the world of technology. When there are no available financial resources our technology advancements will be at a stand still.

Progress Report on the Long-Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2010

The Long- Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020 consists of 4 different areas and was developed to guide the implementation and integration of technology across Texas. The four areas of the Texas Long-Range Plan for Technology consist of Teaching and Learning; Leadership, Administration, and Instructional Support; Infrastructure for Technology; and Educator Preparation and Development. The Long-Range Plan for Technology was designed to track the state of Texas’ growth and development since the plan was put into place in 2006. The overall findings are that Texas is making progress toward the goals set, but the progress is slow and steady and not as significant as planned.
The findings on the progress report on the Long-Range Plan for Technology are generated from results on the Texas STaR Charts, which are required by the state so that progress can be monitored campus by campus. These findings help us know where we stand in relation to the goals of the Texas Long-Range Plan for Technology. After reviewing the inforamtion provided, it appears that as a whole there is an increase In the number of school campuses that are considered to be Advanced Key Star Classification in all summary areas of the chart. From what I evaluated, the area with the most positive increase is the Infrastructure for Technology. I believe this to be so, due to the fact that we now have more needed resources. Other areas would have more progress if we had more time to work toward making improvments. Time is always a factor and often impedes progress.
I personally believe that the findings in this particular progress report display the fact that we are moving forward to meet our goals. Time is often an issue, but it is positive that the state of Texas seems to be moving forward in the world of technology. The Long-Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020 has provided us with a goal and it looks like we are doing our best to meet the standards set forth by working hard to make technological advancements.

The Texas Long Range Plan for Technology, 2006 - 2020

There are four areas of the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020. Those four areas include Teaching and Learning, Educator Preparation and Development, Leadership, Administration and Instructional Support, and Infrastructure for Technology. After reviewing the information on the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology, I decided to focus on the area of Teaching and Learning. The area of Teaching and Learning is a very important aspect of the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology.
“The key to success for all students is the assurance that they are all fully engaged in their learning processes and that there are opportunities in their schools, libraries, homes, and communities that stimulate and initiate this engagement.” The area of Teaching and Learning discusses how educational plans need to be tailored to the needs of all students. There is no way we can have one plan that fits the needs of every student, providing them with the best educational experience possible. Special needs students need software geared toward their needs and students from different backgrounds may require different forms of technology in relation to learning. Many students are not exposed to computers or technology outside of their classroom. Some students do not travel or have the opportunity to learn outside their immediate community.

The Texas Long Range Plan for Technology provides guidelines for teaching and learning. It states that all learners have constant access to relevant technologies, tools, resources and services for individualized instruction. (24 hours a day/ 7 days a week) This plan also states that information and communication technologies are used to collaborate, construct knowledge, and provide solutions to real life problems. This plan also states that research-based strategies are used in all subject areas. Also, this plan ensures that communmication is done in a way that it is suitable for diverse audiences. As stated in the Teaching and Learning section of the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology, there are challenges that impact progress. The need for curriculum alignment, the need for more time to visit classrooms, explore the best practices in technology, learn new curriculum strategies, and being more flexible are all areas in which challenges are presented. These are areas in which we are always in need of making adjustments or improvments in order to continue to move forward in the area of techonological advancement in the classroom.
I personally believe this area of Teaching and Learning is very important. The role teaching and learning has in the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology is very important for many reasons. I feel as if our future lies in the hands of today’s students. If we are able to provide students with a very high level educational experience, we will send prepared individuals into the real world.
